Neutering

How Can Neutering Help Keep My Dog Healthy?

If your dog is not a registered breeding pedigree, then having them neutered is one of the best decisions you can make for their welfare. Neutering will not change their personality or character and in addition to being an important part of responsible dog ownership, neutering also has many health benefits.

In male dogs, neutering prevents testicular cancers and significantly reduces the risks of prostate problems later in life, as well as reducing their urges to stray. In bitches, neutering has been proven to reduce the chance of her developing mammary tumours and eliminates the risk of pyometra, a life-threatening womb infection which is common in unspayed bitches and can develop very suddenly.

Both male and female dogs can be neutered from 6 months old, or sometimes later depending on breed type. Your vet can advise on the best age to neuter your individual dog, please feel free to contact the surgery with any questions.

How Can Neutering Help Keep My Cat Healthy?

If your cat is not a registered breeding pedigree, there is no reason not to neuter your pet. Neutering your female cat will prevent unwanted litters and with so many abandoned cats in rescue centres it is an essential part of responsible cat ownership.

Neutering your male cat will help prevent behavioural problems such as fighting and scent marking and the associated health problems such as bite wounds and viral infections. Both male and female cats can be neutered from 6 months old. Please feel free to contact the surgery for more information.
